What is Basal Metabolic Rate (BMR)?

Basal Metabolic Rate (BMR) is the minimal amount of energy (measured in calories) your body requires to maintain vital life functions while at complete rest. Even when you are sleeping or sitting perfectly still, your body is constantly working to:

  • Sustain breathing
  • Circulate blood
  • Regulate hormones
  • Maintain temperature

Understanding your BMR is the essential first step in managing your weight, as it accounts for 60-75% of your total daily energy expenditure.

The Science: Mifflin-St Jeor Equation

Our tool utilizes the Mifflin-St Jeor Equation, currently regarded as the most accurate standard for healthy adults. It calculates BMR by weigh-adjusting age, gender, and height variables:

Equation for Men BMR = (10 × weight) + (6.25 × height) - (5 × age) + 5
Equation for Women BMR = (10 × weight) + (6.25 × height) - (5 × age) - 161

* Weight must be in kg and height in cm for these specific scientific constants.

How to Use the BMR Tool

1

Select Gender: Biological sex significantly impacts metabolic rates due to average lean muscle mass differences.

2

Enter Physical Data: Use the toggle to switch between Metric (cm/kg) or Imperial (in/lbs) units.

3

Review Results: Use your BMR as a baseline before adding your physical activity multipliers (TDEE) to plan a deficit or surplus.
