What is Body Fat Percentage?
Your **Body Fat Percentage** is the total mass of fat divided by your total body mass, multiplied by 100. Unlike BMI, which only considers height and weight, body fat percentage distinguishes between **lean muscle mass** and **fat mass**, making it a much more accurate indicator of fitness and health.
Essential Fat
Necessary for life and reproductive functions. (2-5% Men, 10-13% Women)
Storage Fat
Fat in adipose tissue, protects internal organs in the chest and abdomen.
The US Navy Method
This scientific formula was developed by the US Navy Health Research Center as a cost-effective and surprisingly accurate way to estimate body fat without expensive DEXA scans.
It relies on specific circumference measurements where individuals tend to store fat differently based on biological sex:
- Men: Focused on Neck and Waist (at navel) measurements.
- Women: Includes Hip measurements, as women naturally carry more essential fat in the lower body for reproductive health.
Pro-Tips for Accuracy
Use a Flexible Tape
Use a non-stretchable, flexible measuring tape. Ensure it is level all the way around and pulled taut, but not "digging" into the skin.
Measure at the Same Time
Body water retention changes throughout the day. For the most consistent tracking, measure yourself first thing in the morning before eating or drinking.
